A calm, coordinated approach
Fibromyalgia is exhausting in a way that is hard to explain to anyone who has not lived with it. The pain moves. The fatigue does not lift after sleeping. And too often the advice is to manage it and wait.
At Acupuncture of West Florida in Clearwater, Dr. Kim Windschauer, AP treats fibromyalgia symptoms with deliberately gentle acupuncture — fewer needles, shallower insertion, and a pace set by how sensitive you are rather than by a fixed protocol.
This is supportive care used alongside your rheumatologist or primary physician. We do not diagnose fibromyalgia, we do not change your medication, and we will say plainly at your consultation whether we think acupuncture is a reasonable fit for you.

Our approach
How treatment works
Consultation
A full history of your pain pattern, sleep, energy and what has already been tried, plus an honest answer about whether acupuncture is likely to help you.
Gentle first session
A conservative, short treatment so we can see how your system responds before doing more.
Building the plan
Points adjusted week to week around whatever is hardest — pain, sleep, fatigue or flares — rather than repeating the same treatment.
Reassessment
A scheduled review of what has changed, with a step-down to maintenance if you are responding well.
The research
Evidence & guidelines
Acupuncture has been studied as an adjunctive therapy for fibromyalgia, with published trials and systematic reviews reporting improvement in pain and sleep for some patients compared with usual care alone. The quality of evidence varies between studies and acupuncture is not a cure; it is best understood as one part of a plan that also includes your medical care, graded activity and sleep support.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Can acupuncture help fibromyalgia?+
Many people with fibromyalgia use acupuncture for pain intensity, sleep quality and fatigue. Published trials report improvement in symptoms for some patients, though results vary from person to person and acupuncture is not a cure for fibromyalgia. Dr. Kim will tell you honestly at your consultation whether she thinks you are likely to benefit.
Will the needles make my pain worse?+
Fibromyalgia often comes with heightened sensitivity, so treatment here is deliberately gentle — fewer needles, shallower insertion and shorter early sessions. We start conservatively and adjust based on how you respond, rather than using a standard protocol on everyone.
How many sessions does it take?+
Most people are asked to commit to a short initial series so we can judge the response, commonly once or twice a week for several weeks, then a reassessment. You get a written plan with a session count and cost at your first visit — no open-ended packages.
Do I have to stop my medication?+
No. We never advise anyone to stop or change a prescribed medication. Acupuncture here is used alongside the care from your rheumatologist or primary physician, not in place of it.
What if I also have chronic fatigue or migraines?+
That is common. Sleep, fatigue, headaches, IBS-type digestive symptoms and jaw tension often travel with fibromyalgia, and they are all addressed in the same treatment plan rather than as separate problems.
Do you take insurance?+
We are a self-pay practice. We provide a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted. Call 727-490-6060 for current pricing.
Where are you located?+
